My role on The New York Times’ pandemic mapping project allowed me to bear witness to a system of incarceration that made avoiding the coronavirus nearly impossible. People serving sentences were infected at a rate more than three times higher than the rest of the country. My colleagues and I listened throughout the pandemic as they described bunks an arm’s length apart and transfers that spread the virus from block to block and facility to facility We worked for months to bring it to light in this powerful graphic piece.
